My new little grand daughter, Hannah Kate joined our family on Monday, February 6. I was able to pull off a few good newborn shots in the hospital room. More shots are on the way, but I had to post this... I'm a little proud of her.

Winter Water

A heavy mid-winter rainfall filled the streams and rivers in north Arkansas a few days ago. With that came an opportunity to get out and capture some waterfall beauty with my camera. Photo buddy, Rhonda Mills and I took an afternoon hike up a nearby canyon called Lost Valley. We were zeroed in on photographing lovely Eden Falls at the end of the trail, but found ourselves intrigued by the little hidden gems of Clark Creek along the way.

As a photographer, I always look forward to shooting the next wedding. Having done this for awhile you could say I am somewhat "seasoned", but that doesn't stop me from studying and learning new things. This wedding was one I had looked forward to for awhile and I knew I had some time to give it during shooting that would allow me to practice new techniques. Thank you, Austin and Ashley for scheduling in that extra hour of shooting... for that we have some keepers.

Austin Freeman and Ashley Mildfelt were married on Saturday, November 12 at Thorncrown Chapel in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. Their reception was held at The Space in downtown Eureka Springs. I didn't know before hand that in addition to being a very smart and sweet couple, Austin and Ashley can dance up a storm.... and so could most of their guests. Dinner was great, the location was great and the dance floor never cooled off.. not for a minute.

These are just a few of my favorite shots from our afternoon and evening together.

The green spots on the next photo are from the lazor lights. Kudos to our great DJ, Sean from Music in Motion.

Alex Halper Eureka Springs Arkansas Senior

Meet my new friend, Alex. He's a senior this year at Eureka Springs High School. I don't often get an opportunity to photograph high school seniors, but I have a good time at it when I do. Alex is pretty easy going and patiently endured our long photo session last weekend. We kicked it off shooting with his father's beautiful red GTO (see below) for an hour or two and then took off to get some shots here and there around this amazing town. These are only a few of the many great shots we got that day. Check 'em out, Alex... there will be lots more real soon.

The wedding date is set in June for Amy and Evan, but they chose to have engagement photographs taken among the beauty of the fall foliage. The setting is our beautiful Buffalo National River in the northwest Arkansas Ozarks. Natural beauty abounds here so it is the perfect spot to capture a glimpse of the love these two share. Adam and Gerri were married on October 8, 2011 in Holiday Island, Arkansas.

I've been a little slow with blogging lately, but I wanted to be sure to post a few photos from their beautiful fall wedding at the Holiday Island Baptist Church and reception at "The Barn".

Gerri chose a sweet little dress to wear out and about for photographs before the ceremony, then switched out to her mother's wedding gown that had been altered and updated for Gerri's wedding.

A family member provided the 1957 Oldsmobile for photos.

Adam and Gerri are all about their families and it showed on their wedding day. I was blessed to be there and share in this special event.

I recently had the privilege to spend a few hours photographing my wonderful friends, the Kresse family. I've known them for over 25 years and have watched these beautiful sisters grow into women. We met at their property out on the Kings River in northwest Arkansas and got these (and many other) shots in before a huge storm blew in. Gust front is apparent in their blowing hair!

The opportunities for this family to all be together only occur a few times a year so this is a special capture.

Kayla and Michael are married ( Eureka Springs Wedding Photographer)

A few days ago I photographed this beautiful wedding for Kayla and Michael. Despite the searing heat, we managed to sweat our way through the photo sessions. The pre-wedding session that was planned for the outdoor gardens at the Historic Crescent Hotel, had to be moved inside. Outside the temps ranged from 107 to 112 degrees depending on where you were standing. I was able to stay on top of my game plan and pull out all the stops for some of my best shots yet.

Time to catch up

It seems lately that I have been so busy shooting and working on images that I haven't had a chance to enter anything on my blog. Not necessarily in order, here are a few of my recent photo shoots in a quick little summary.

First I want to share a few photos from a great little family session I did for the Langhover's in Eureka Springs, AR. They are living in a beautiful home known as the Penn Castle that was built in the late 1800's and they invited me to come to the castle and take family photos for them. It's an amazing location as you can see from a few of the images below. They are a great couple who have adopted little Layla.

These images are from Steve and Lisa's wedding at the historic Crescent Hotel. They are one very happy couple. Congratulations, you two!

And this was one of my favorite sessions. The Hackenmueller's have been married 60 years and their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren gathered to celebrate. I was fortunate enough to capture the family early one morning. This is one of my favorite photos of the lucky couple.

Happiness. Having my family all together in one spot... that makes me happy.

Now that our son, Austin and his wife, Hailey have moved back to the area we have more opportunities to see them and that is so wonderful for me. Our son, Ryan and his wife, Amanda and our grand daughter Madison live three hours away and we see them as much as we can. They planned some vacation time to come home and visit over the last week, so I planned some photo time.

They are all familiar with being chased around by mom and the camera so it doesn't take long to get them in the mood. The hardest part is setting the self timer and jumping into the shot.

We took a lot of images, but these are a few of my favs:

Gladden-Nance Family photos

I love family photos. They are so special and so important at the same time.

What a blessing it was for me when my friend, Grace asked me to come and capture a few family photos for her during a casual reception for her son and new daughter in law who had recently married. It's the blending of families and this was a time when all of the family members would be present and an excellent opportunity to gather a few shots. I was so happy that I had the day open. Some of my favorite shots from the day are below.

Even the dogs are related and it was a chance for mother and daughter to share a photo!

Lindsay and Dusty Married

I try to blog events in the order that they happen, but lately that's not always the case. I posted Lindsay and Dusty's Engagement photos earlier this month. Now it's about time I got the wedding images up for them to view. I've been behind in my work and slow to get this done. Even so, it was a great wedding with so many wonderful participants and lots of photo opps. It's been years since I have seen such a big crowd of beautiful flower girls.

Morgan and Charles ( Eureka Springs Wedding Photographer)

I had been looking forward to this event for quite some time. Morgan, Charles and I had been trying to settle on a location for photos before their wedding ceremony and were running out of options. Fortunately, one of Morgan's friends had this lovely vacation home in Holiday Island, just north of Eureka Springs, where Morgan was to get ready for the ceremony. It turned out to be a wonderful spot to capture some "before" photos and that all important "first look". Morgan is a beautiful bride and so easy to capture in photographs.

I usually try to keep an air of comedy going when I am shooting a couple before their ceremony, but this time I didn't have to. Charles kept me in stitches from the moment he entered the room. He could swing a great "serious" look for the picture, then he was back to keeping the smiles and giggles going.

We stopped in downtown Eureka Springs at Harding Spring for some beautiful garden photos before heading out to Circle of Light for their ceremony and reception at the lake.

Jacky and Ryan are married

"Very well thought out and very meticulously planned" is how you would describe Jacky and Ryan's May 21st wedding. I met with Jacky and her mother, Mary way back in December to talk about the ceremony and reception they were planning to hold at the Historic Crescent Hotel in Eureka Springs, AR. Everything turned out great and we couldn't have ordered up any better weather. Their ceremony was held outside on the East Lawn and dinner reception in the Crescent Conservatory. Lot's of happiness surrounds this couple. A few images from their story are posted below.

Lindsay and Dusty Engagement

Here's a fun engagement session I shot for Dusty and Lindsay the day before their wedding. They are from Louisiana and were not able to make another trip to Arkansas before the wedding so with tight schedules all around we managed to pull this session off just before their rehearsal dinner. Molly and Terry's wedding ( Newton County Arkansas Wedding Photographer)

Deep in the woods in Newton County, Arkansas lies a little community by the name of Murray. Molly and Terry decided to come here to be married on May 21, 2011 and they invited me to be there to capture their small ceremony in the woods at Beyond Reality Cabin. With their loved ones in attendance Molly and Terry exchanged vows and involved the entire family in the ceremony. I love to work at home in Newton County so it was a very special opportunity for me. Everyone in this family is so kind and caring. Even Terry's twin brother, Thomas, officiated the ceremony.

Part of the ceremony involved a "lemonade unity". Terry placed lemon juice in the mix to represent the sometimes sour times in a marriage and Molly added sugar to the mix to represent the sweet times in a marriage. They served up some lemonade to everyone and shared a toast.

I have always been amazed by the bond between twins and it is so evident here as you can see in the family photo below.

One that I always count as an important photograph to capture, father and daughter sharing a moment following a wedding ceremony. It's one of my most cherished photos from my own wedding in the woods in Newton County.

What a beautiful day for a beautiful couple. Best wishes to you, both!

Kelly and Colby's Wedding Eureka Springs Wedding Photographer

It was the afternoon of May 14, and Colby knew he was scheduled to have a few photos taken before his wedding, alone and not to see his bride until she walked down the stone path at Thorncrown Chapel. Kelly had other plans. From the time we first met to plan photography for their wedding months ago, Kelly knew she wanted to surprise Colby before the wedding and have photos taken together out at their lake cabin. Spring has been crazy busy for me with a good schedule of photography aside from the duties of settling my mother's estate. On Monday I got to do what I love best.... shoot in my neighborhood. I live very close to the upper end of the Buffalo National River in northwest Arkansas and I love it when my clients want to hold their photo sessions here. Gerri and Adam wanted to have their engagement photographs taken on and around the Buffalo River. Both are outdoor enthusiasts and they couldn't have chosen a better spot. This is one of the last photos I captured of them. I have soooo.... many to work up, but I am so excited about them I couldn't wait to post a bunch. So here's a start with many more are on the way!

Meet the Wright Family

They are close knit and have been on this land for many years. The Wright's are an amazing family who all still live relatively close to each other in and near the little town of Garfield, Arkansas. One of the sons, Joey Wright, contacted me about coming out to photograph the family. He told me that it had been a very long time since they had taken a family photo (40 years +) and that one brother and one sister had passed away. It was important to him and the rest of his family to come together and have a new photograph made. This huge tree was planted many years ago by Mr Wright and one of his sons. I spent a few wonderful hours catching great photos of some very special people. I felt honored to be chosen to document this gathering on a beautiful spring day in the Ozarks.

The Queen Anne Mansion

A few weeks ago I had an opportunity to visit the newly renovated Queen Anne Mansion in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. Although some of the landscaping was not complete at the time, they were open for tours of the inside. By now it should all be completed.

This outdoor garden space, obviously incomplete at the time of my visit, will have stone walkways and beautiful plantings. The fountain at the end mimics some of the stone carvings on the exterior of the mansion.

Molly and James (Eureka Springs Wedding Photographer)

Backing up to a few weeks ago for some sneak shots from James and Molly's wedding on March 19, 2011 in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. They chose the site of the Historic Crescent Hotel for the ceremony and reception. Molly and her attendants had the pleasure of getting ready for the ceremony in the elegant bridal salon located in the hotel. A small group of family and friends attended the ceremony held outdoors in the gazebo. Afterward the reception was held in the Crescent Conservatory. What a beautiful spring day for a very special event. This family is very close and I had the pleasure of witnessing a great deal of joy and emotion that day.

A different kind of session Buffalo River Photographer

I live in one of the most beautiful places on earth. Period.

Every once in a while I get out and hunt up some beauty to photograph and when my friend Rhonda emailed and asked if I wanted to go on a hike and seek out the beautiful Ozark Dutchman's Breeches to photograph I had to say "yes!".

It turned out to be a cold, cloudy day.... that's mostly good. Great light for capturing some waterfalls in all their glory. Cold means no ticks and chiggars yet. The flat light turned out to be OK for the wildflower photographs although I would have liked a little more light on some of them. We had a great time and are already talking about another adventure.

This first photo is one that Rhonda took of me zeroing in on the Dutchmen's Breeches.

I am attracted to the water and we spent way too much time shooting the waterfalls, but I am having fun editing the images:

Madison is Two!

Remember when your main goal of the day was to swing on the swing and make a good twenty trips down the slide? Play with a two year old for a few hours and you'll remember those times. Our grand-daughter recently blew through her second birthday with all the energy a little girl can possibly have. She's a beautiful, healthy bundle of action with a little attitude thrown in to spice things up. We recently enjoyed a visit with her (and her mom and dad). I was able to capture these pictures thanks to some wonderful weather for playing outside, plus it was warm enough to chow down on some ice cream cake. I always enjoy time spent with family, and of course, my camera is usually along to capture those times. Happy Birthday, Maddy Paige! Spring is on the way and I hear there is a new swing set in the works.

Autumn and Josh Eureka Springs Wedding Photographer

"Make every shot count" that's what I told myself last Saturday at Autumn and Josh's wedding ceremony at Thorncrown Chapel in Eureka Springs. Usually, that is my motto anyway, but we were running short on time this day. So much was in our favor, though. A beautiful bride, a beautiful bride's maid and three sweet little flower girls to start. The guys looked pretty good, too. The lighting was excellent given it was a noon wedding ceremony. March weather can be anything you can imagine in the Ozarks. We were fortunate that it was only cold.

After the ceremony, Autumn and Josh and their families and friends all gathered for a meal together.

Thank you, guys, for letting me capture so many moments in so little time. I think we did good. Enjoy this sneak peek!

Time Out

Now that things have warmed up and the snow is almost all gone I am looking back at those beautiful winter days we experienced only a few weeks ago. My dog, Tess and I go out every morning to do our chores and feed the younger horses. It was especially difficult when the snow was knee deep on me. Tess would get snow packed between her toes and would have to stop from time to time and clean it out. She would leap through the snow ahead of me and break the trail. It is our quiet time... our morning walk. She loves it. I love it. It's quite the hike up the hill, then up some more, then down to the cabin, then back up the hill to home.

I like to walk a lot. It's good for me.

Just yesterday on the walk we saw bluebirds. My mom sent them....

I know.

I am very happy to announce the NEW website for Maffei Albers Photography
This project started almost a year ago. So many things got in it's way.... I gave up on it a few times and nearly threw it over the cliff, but at the last minute I decided to pull it back up and finish. Now I feel a lot better and I really like the new site. Take a few minutes to visit and look through the galleries. I'll be adding new images to them as time goes on.

Silver Tea (Eureka Springs Photographer)

Every year in December, the ladies from Saint James Episcopal Church in Eureka Springs, AR pull together a fund raising event called the Silver Tea. Every year it benefits a different organization in the Eureka Springs community. This year's beneficiary was the the Carnagie Library. Here are some images from this year's event.

I first met the Buchholz family around 4 years ago when I was hired to photograph their daughter, Kayla's wedding at Thorncrown Chapel in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. It was a memorable event and a great pleasure to photograph. Then, a year ago, I was contacted again and asked this time to photograph daughter Katrina's wedding. I was honored to be asked by the parents of multiple daughters to photograph more than one of their children's weddings. So this fall, on October 15, Katrina married her love, Derek Selsor at Thorncrown Chapel in Eureka Springs. Fall is a beautiful time of year in the Ozarks and Eureka Springs is full of that natural beauty. Thorncrown Chapel sits in the forest and is surrounded by the warm colors of fall. After the ceremony, Katrina and Derek enjoyed a reception with family and friends in the Conservatory Room at the historic Crescent Hotel. Caldwell Family Session (Buffalo National River Photographer)

I first met Melinda at my son and daughter in law's wedding shower earlier this summer. I was taking some pictures of the shower and she and I talked about her need for some family photos and a photograph she needed for her own business website. I gave her my card and we finally got the chance to get together and shoot these images at our favorite place, the Buffalo National River, near Ponca, AR. The fall colors were a little past their peak, but it still looked beautiful that day. I had a great time visiting with Melinda, Skyler and Rufus and capturing these images of them. The popular Steel Creek access is one of my favorite places to photograph people and you can see why. The beauty of nature is boundless here and what it does for your soul cannot be described in words. Here is a sneak peek from our session. Enjoy!

Last year I had the pleasure of taking senior portraits of Mason Wilks. Now it's his sister, Riley's turn. Fortunately, we were able to find a beautiful fall day among Riley's busy schedule and still have some warm temps for most of the afternoon. Riley and her family live on Fisherman's Haven Resort on Table Rock Lake in southwest Missouri. Their home is a great setting with beautiful grassy areas, giant trees, bluffs and of course the beautiful lake. Riley is so pretty and fun to be around. You can tell she loves the great outdoors.... oh and the Kansas City Chiefs, and volleyball, and much more!
Our afternoon session was great fun with some really nice people in a beautiful spot in the Ozarks..... I'm kinda lucky.

Lindsay and Owen (Eureka Springs Wedding Photographer)

I first met with Lindsay and Owen nearly a year before their planned wedding date of October 2, 2010. I knew right away that they would be a fun, light hearted couple and we would certainly create some awesome wedding day photographs. During our first meeting I suggested ways to plan that "first look" so that they could get together prior to their ceremony for photographs without any rush and stress. Owen came up with the idea for them to use blindfolds. I have to admit, I had never heard of doing that, but it was a cool idea. They pulled it off beautifully on the lawn of the Historic Crescent Hotel. Later their ceremony and reception were held at the Basin Park Hotel, another of Eureka Springs' great historic venues. What a great day all around, timing, weather, location... everything came together in a smooth, perfect flow. Here are a few photos that we captured that day.

September is a beautiful time of year to be married. Brianna and Blake chose September 18, 2010 as the perfect day to exchange their vows on the East Lawn of the Historic Crescent Hotel in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. A small group of friends and family gathered for a quiet ceremony outdoors in the garden area. Fortunately, we were able to capture almost all of our photographs before the rain set in for the evening. Here's a little peek at some of the photos from their day.

5K Running of the Elk (Ponca Arkansas Photographer)

The first ever 5K Running of the Elk was held on September 11, 2010 at 8:30 am in Ponca, Arkansas and I was invited to photograph the event. The run was hosted by the Upper Buffalo River Merchants Association and was a charity event with 100% of the proceeds going to benefit the Arkansas Children's Hospital in Little Rock. 107 runners turned out on a beautiful morning to run in one of the most beautiful places in the country. Why in the world is it called the "Running of the Elk"? The area pictured below is a favorite haunt of a large herd of elk that live in the Buffalo River valley. Unfortunately, when the sun came out, the elk retreated to the shady woods and riverside so they were not available for photos. Thanks to all the great sponsors of the event and the folks who worked hard to make this happen. I hear talk about next year's event.....

Jessa and Donald

Every once in a while I get an opportunity to work in some very unique and beautiful places. On August the 7th I had that opportunity, and to top it all off that special location was close to my home. My good friends and neighbors Newt and Amy asked me to photograph their daughter's wedding ceremony and reception. The entire event was held on the grounds around their pottery shop, Osage Clayworks, which is located inside a fantastic old stone store that is on the National Register of Historic places. We couldn't have asked for a more beautiful afternoon. So many people turned out for the wedding and afterward... Amy's BBQ..wow. Congratulations to Jessa and Donald! Mallory and Jordan/ Eureka Springs Wedding Photographer

Some people make wedding photography very easy for me. Mallory and Jordan were that kind of couple. It was obvious that they love each other very much. We had a great time with some beautiful weather and fantastic locations. We began photographs at the historic Crescent Hotel in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. The bride and bridesmaids got dressed in the bridal salon at the New Moon Spa. Mallory and Jordan shared a first look out on the lawn and we took off from there with all the wedding party and family photographs. Afterward, Mallory and Jordan were married at the Thorncrown Chapel. A reception was held at the Valley View Baptist Church following the ceremony.

Austin and Hailey's Wedding

OK, now it's our turn. On Monday 8.9.10, our son, Austin married his love, Hailey Mills here at our home at 8:00 am. It was a small ceremony for just the immediate family and a few close friends. Hailey's brother in law photographed the ceremony so that I could be present as "Mom". Afterward I took these photos. We are all so happy for them. Looking forward to many happy years of family life and love. Congratulations kids! I love you.... Mom.

I just love a nice, quiet little elopement ceremony. Heather and Jason had been planning this for months and finally settled on the right spot, a little B&B in Eureka Springs called the Hideaway. It was a perfect day for them and you can tell they are ready to share a great life together!

June 26, 2010 was a hot steamy day in northwest Arkansas. Melissa Foster and Seth Mosley were married at the Blue Spring Heritage Center in Eureka Springs. It was a beautiful setting under a bluff shelter just downstream from one of the largest springs in Arkansas. Family and friends gathered for the ceremony. Afterward a cloudburst chased us back up under the bluff shelter, but once the rain stopped the fog settled in to give us an excellent opportunity for photographs. Thank you Melissa and Seth for sticking it out in the heat. We got some great shots.

I had the pleasure of photographing Lisa and Matt's wedding ceremony on May 28. They shared a quiet ceremony with family and a few friends at Thorncrown Chapel in Eureka Springs. We captured a few images before the wedding at the Heartstone Inn. Lisa and Matt are so friendly and easy to work with. It was a beautiful evening and I was so happy to be there.

Daniel and Kathryn were married on June 13 in Eureka Springs, AR. The couple shared a "first look" at the historic Crescent Hotel so that we were able to capture some family pictures prior to the ceremony. Their ceremony was held at the Thorncrown Chapel. It's taken some time to get these done, but I think it was worth the wait. Jim and Stacey were married at Thorncrown Chapel almost a month ago. Jim is an architect and naturally wanted to be married to Stacey, the love of his life, in one of the most beautiful buildings in the US. Following the ceremony they celebrated with a reception held in the Conservatory room at the Historic Crescent Hotel, also in Eureka Springs, AR. Best wishes to you Jim, Stacey and beautiful Summer. There's nothing better for a photographer mom to do on Mother's Day than take photographs of her kids. Right? Austin and Hailey are engaged and they are a fantastic couple in so many ways. Just look at them. We set out to take a few pictures and ended up just having lots of fun. They were dancing in the pasture and jumping and as you can see, my horses are OK with it all. There's no better spot for photographs than the Ponca area of the Buffalo National River in northwest Arkansas. Braden spends a lot of time in Ponca with his family where they have a cabin resort and canoe rental on the river so it was naturally the right spot to capture his images for this milestone in his life. First Wedding of 2010

Susila Gabbert and Stephen Jones were married on Saturday January 2, 2010 at Thorncrown Chapel in Eureka Springs, Arkansas surrounded by their family and friends. Even though it was very cold we were able to get outdoors for some beautiful photographs along the walkway to the chapel. Afterwards a dinner reception was held at the Crescent Conservatory in the historic Crescent Hotel. Susila and Stephen are a very happy couple and it is very evident in their photographs. Holidays at the Ranch

Getting together with our family is always special, be it Christmas or any other occassion. Here are a few shots from our time together this Christmas season. Ryan and Amanda brought our granddaughter, Madison for a visit. She makes all of our visits special in a new way for us.

We were also blessed to find out that our son Austin and his girlfriend, Hailey are now engaged to be married. We went outside for a few quick shots but it was really COLD. We look forward to a warmer day to get some real engagement photos. Congrats guys!

I was privileged to meet and photograph the Kirkpatrick family earlier this month at a beautiful place called Azalea Falls Lodge. Mr and Mrs Kirkpatrick are celebrating 50 years of marriage and were fortunate to have all four of their sons come to the lodge and spend a weekend with them. What a sweet couple they are and a great family. Although our time was short, it was a pleasure to meet them and capture a bit of their time together. Happy Anniversary!

Not your everyday wedding.... Rachel and Travis wanted a fun and special wedding that would involve their guests, too. They pulled it off complete with Ghostbusters and famous guests, all at the Crescent Hotel in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. The hotel is famous for it's resident ghosts, so it was the perfect location for this spooky wedding. What a nice group of crazy people. I had a great time!

Last week Mason's mother contacted me about shooting senior photos for her son. They own a resort on a nearby lake and Mason wanted to be sure to get some of his senior pics with his jet ski. So.... yes, it IS late October and, yep he is out there on the water in swim shorts. Luckily it was a warm day (for fall). I had a good time visiting with Mason and his family as we covered most of their property picking the best spots for photos. Here are just a few of my favorites. Patti and Jason were married on October 3, 2009 at Circle of Light, just west of Eureka Springs, Arkansas. Friends and family gathered to witness their ceremony that was held out on the deck overlooking beautiful Beaver Lake. The couple included their two young children in the ceremony. A cake and champagne reception was held inside after the ceremony followed by dancing and spending time with their loved ones.
